We Walked It Off for KIDSPORTS

As a “marketing guy,” I get the chance to attend a lot of community events, and just about all of them are fantastic. But even with a long list of events under my belt, I don’t know if I’ve ever been more proud of my community than I was last night at Walk It Off for KIDSPORTS at Eugene’s Alton Baker Park.

We love KIDSPORTS, and the work they do in Eugene/Springfield to get kids active is absolutely phenomenal.  Since their work is directly impacting the health of children in Lane County, we knew we wanted to support their cause. But rather than just cutting them a check, we wanted to get people in Eugene/Springfield active and involved in supporting KIDSPORTS’ mission of letting “all kids play.” So along with Liz and Reilly (our pals at Mix-94.5 FM), we decided on a very simple concept: for one evening, we would turn people’s exercise into cash for KIDSPORTS. With that idea in mind, PacificSource pledged to donate $1 for every mile people walked, ran, or cycled.

Every Wednesday of this summer, we’ve been at Walk It Off Wednesdays at Alton Baker Park. It’s been a great promotion, and on average, between 100 and 150 people show up to exercise every week. With that total in mind, we planned for a modest bump in attendance to account for the KIDSPORTS supporters. That “modest bump” turned out to be not so modest at all! After it was all said and done, more than 400 people showed up ready to sweat it out for KIDSPORTS. Here were the totals:

  • Total number of walkers, runners, and cyclers: 404
  • Average mileage per person: 3.5
  • Total mileage: 1,413
  • PacificSource donation to KIDSPORTS: $1,413

I was blown away by how eager people were to donate their exercise to support such a wonderful non-profit. People of all ages and fitness levels gave everything they had out there, and even though everyone came back sweaty, just about everybody had a smile. Being at this event was completely heartwarming, and it makes me so proud to live in a community where so many people are willing to give their time and energy to help a group like KIDSPORTS.

A huge thank you goes to the folks at Mix-94.5 FM and Oregon Medical Group for partnering with us to present Walk It Off this summer, and for getting the word out about the event last night. And of course, thank you so much to 404 people who came out and exercised. Whether you donated 1 mile or 10, you helped get kids off the couch and on the field of play. Enjoy a huge pat on the back today!

  1. It’s great that Oregon Medical Group does charitable work, but it would also be nice if they responded to my complaint about their mismanagement of my case by one of their physical therapists, and if they were willing to work with the BBB to raise their “F-rating.”
