Bite Into a Healthy Lifestyle with Daily Victories

Need help keeping your healthy diet? Our registered dietitian Laura Dudley is here to assist. She continues as our guest blogger during National Nutrition Month!

During nutrition consults, I often find that while most people’s food choices leave room for improvement, they already have some good habits in place. That’s a great place to focus your energy – on what you are doing well. Have you ever heard the saying ’what you appreciate, appreciates’? If you focus on what you’re doing well, and build on it, you are well on your way to a healthier lifestyle.

The Daily Victory Journal is an activity that helps you focus on what you are doing well, and allows you time to think about what you’d like to do better. Each day, carve out a few minutes to write down what you did well. For example:

  • This morning I had oatmeal with walnuts and cinnamon.NNM_Logo_2015_hires_lg_r1
  • I ate two delicious mandarins and some (not so delicious) broccoli with my lunch
  • I stepped out for a 10-minute walk on one of my breaks
  • I went to yoga class during my lunch break
  • I chose a small piece of 70 percent dark chocolate for dessert
  • I opted for a glass of seltzer water rather than wine

This activity will get you focused positively and have you saying “hey, I made some great choices today”. Then, you might want to ask yourself, “what could I have done differently?” Based on that insight, set an intention for one thing you’d like to do better tomorrow.
