High-Fives for Health Nuts in Corvallis

Xochitl and I spent the afternoon in Corvallis giving out dollar bills (and high-fives) to people we caught making healthy choices.

From drinking water to doing cartwheels, we looked for anyone participating in a healthy activity and handed them a dollar. We appreciated all those people who found ways to stay healthy and active, and were out there doing it.

After giving us a puzzled look, most people asked, “But why are you giving me a dollar?” We thought a dollar would be a fun way to reward people for taking care of their health, while making the point that becoming healthier people is something we can all do to bring down the cost of healthcare. Since these efforts can save healthcare money down the road, we wanted to share a sample of those savings.

We know we can’t catch everyone who makes healthy choices. (Seriously, we can’t catch up to some of you runners!) So whether you see us out there or not, give yourself a pat on the back for being proactive about your health. Those efforts you make every day to live a healthier lifestyle, no matter how small they may seem, are doing big things to improve our healthcare system in the long run.

So far, our team has visited Eugene, Springfield, Portland, and Corvallis, but we’re not done yet! We’ve got more dollars to hand out, and more ideas for how to reward all you go-getters.

Satin Love Orchestra Rocks River Road Park

I’ve always been a fan of disco and funk music, and would much rather listen to my Dad’s CD’s than anything I hear on the radio. From Earth Wind and Fire to The Bee Gees, I can’t help but bop my head along (which usually leads to full-on jamming). I missed my era.

As you can imagine, I was thrilled to find out we were sponsoring River Road Park’s Concert in the Park featuring Satin Love Orchestra. If you’ve never heard of Satin Love Orchestra, you might think they are, well, an orchestra. Understandable. However, they are about as far from black suits and violins as you can get. Satin Love Orchestra plays hits from the 70’s and 80’s, are known to arrive to their concerts in a white stretch limousine, and have an enthusiastic following of dancing queens and kings (see what I did there?).

We arrived a couple hours before the concert, and gave out apples, oranges, bananas, and peaches to people staking out their spots in the park. We also brought our health trivia game to keep the crowd entertained while they waited, and some healthy recipes to share.

Then, it was time for the concert. Satin Love Orchestra was a hit, and the people at River Road Park were such a fun crowd!

Thank you to our friends at River Road Park for putting on an awesome event. There was a huge turnout, and everyone looked like they were having a great time. I’ve had “Saturday Night Fever” stuck in my head for days, and I’m okay with it.

Balloons Over Bend

This weekend, PacificSource sponsored “Balloons Over Bend” for the second year in a row. We love this event because it gives us a great opportunity to encourage families to be healthier, and have fun doing it! The weekend-long event starts with “Night Glow” on Friday, and then moves on to the children’s festival on Saturday and Sunday, with two hot air balloon launches early each morning (more on that later).

Here’s what our crazy weekend in Bend looked like: (more…)
