We’re moving!

Four years ago, in July, we introduced our One Million Ideas blog. We knew that the best way to change healthcare was by changing the way we think and the way we live. So, we started looking for ideas. Not grandiose ideas, but just a bunch of little ideas. Ideas for small changes that would amount to big changes in the health of our communities.

You have shared some great ideas with us. Because of you and all of the ideas that you shared, we know how to get our yoga on, cook healthfully, lunge properly, and more about the great things that are going on in our community. So, thank you! Thank you, for inspiring us to make the healthy choice the easy choice.

The time has come for us to find a new home. So, we are moving. You can now find us at blog.pacificsource.com, where we will continue to share ways that we can stay healthy, improve access to healthcare, and make some big changes, together.

Ten Tips for Everyday Safety

CaptureSometimes we get so busy we forget to be safe during some of the easiest tasks. Completing day-to-day activities safely and being aware of our surroundings sounds like a simple way to increase safety in our daily routines, but it can be challenging. Here are ten steps to get you started in creating a safer and healthier environment.

  1. Use proper form. Try your best to remember proper physical form in your everyday routines. Keep things close to you on your desk or in the kitchen to avoid over-reaching, and always use your legs when picking up large or heavy items. (Avoid bending at the waist!)
  2. Be aware of your company safety procedures. Be proactive in knowing evacuation routes, members of the safety committee, and safety procedures at your workplace.
  3. Take regular breaks. Taking a quick break from looking at your computer screen or doing mundane tasks will help to re-energize you and keep you alert!
  4. Check your smoke alarms. Once a month, check the smoke alarms in your home to make sure they’re working and replace batteries as needed. Also, keep a fire extinguisher in a central, easy to access location, and learn how to use it.
  5. Let there be light. Proper, adequate lighting is an easy way to stay focused and clear about what you are doing. Keep hallways and outdoor areas well-lit to avoid obstacles.
  6. Maintain your vehicle. Make time for regular vehicle maintenance, such as checking your exterior lights, getting your oil changed, and checking your tire pressure. This is especially important before taking a road trip.
  7. Ventilate your space. When you’re painting or working on projects indoors that involve materials with strong odors, make sure you have proper ventilation. Open windows and doors, and get fans going to keep air circulating. Also, consider using face masks and taking regular fresh-air breaks, especially if ventilation is inadequate.
  8. Exercise regularly. Exercise routines are a good way to improve strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory health, which will allow you to physically function better throughout your day. Research functional exercises to learn more about keeping your body ready for anything!
  9. Be prepared. Thoughtfully determine what you may need to keep yourself healthy and safe during an outing or long day. Do you have sufficient water, clothing, or sun protection? Is your cell phone charged? Does a friend or loved one know where you will be?
  10. Take your time. Giving yourself time to prepare for your day, carefully complete a task, or focus on your routine can save you a lot of time in the long run! Build in extra time when necessary.

Do you ever feel like what you seek is seeking you?

It’s always great when your values as an individual match your employer’s values. Julie T. is one of those PacificSource employees. Julie takes it upon herself to actively live our values, every day.

During Idaho Gives, a 24-hour charitable event, Idahoans will give back to the nonprofits that support their communities. In honor of Idaho Gives, we asked Julie to share her story about why giving back to the community is so near and dear to her heart. Here’s her story:

wanted to seek a career at PacificSource Health Plans. I had the pleasure of working with many individuals over the past few years, and while it was the people that drew me to the company, it was the company’s mission and values that intrigued me the most. One of my favorite values has brought so much passion to my life:

We actively participate in efforts to improve our communities.”

Last year, I was chosen to lead the PacificSource United Way campaign, a company-wide fundraising activity. Although I knew I had the passion, I was very nervous about being able to execute a successful campaign.

At the United Way launch breakfast, I clearly remember Nora Carpenter, CEO of United Way Treasure Valley, saying the best way to inspire people is to share a personal story. I started thinking, “I have a story—a very personal story—but am I brave enough to share it with our staff of more than 100 people?”

The answer was, “Yes!”

I was reluctantly brave, and although it was a very vulnerable moment in my life, it is one that I will never forget. During my childhood, for more than six years, I was matched with a Big Sister from Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. My mom was a single parent, and we didn’t have much. It changed my life.

I think my story inspired people, because over the next six weeks, employee participation in the campaign increased dramatically.  Many employees wanted to learn more about United Way, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Since then, I’ve had the chance to share my story and the benefits of a one-on-one mentoring relationship at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mixer in December, 2015. I will also speak at their Magical Moments Gala in May, 2016. In addition, I have the opportunity to lead the Charity of Choice Committee for Big Brothers Big Sisters and work closely with them this year to continue paying it forward.

The past few months have been life changing for me, and I look forward to remembering these experiences as the time when I found my passion!

As an adult, I realize the impact complete strangers had on my life, because they donated their time, money, or items to a local nonprofit. It means even more to me that I work for a company that encourages their employees to actively participate in the community, because they also believe it changes lives.

It’s a beautiful thing when your career and your passion come together!
